CALLING ALL POETS!
Submissions are currently being accepted for SELCO’s regional poetry anthology, Poetic Strokes. Each year hundreds of writers submit their poems hoping to be chosen for the yearly publishing. Two members of the Lourdes community, teacher Robert Gardner (2011) and senior Tonya Eberhart (2010), have previously been published through this contest.
If you are at least 16 years old and have previously-unplublished work that you would like to submit to the contest, take a look at this year’s poster with submission guidelines by clicking THIS LINK. All submissions are due to the SELCO office by February 15th.
As always, if you have any questions, see Mr. Haugen in the library.
So, get creative and good luck!

Find IRP titles faster!
In an effort to make choosing and locating books for your IRP assignment a little easier, we have created an interactive list which will take you directly to the library catalog information on the book you select.
If you look over to the middle column, you will see a new link titled “Searchable IRP List” right below the link to the main catalog. Clicking on this link will open up an Excel spreadsheet which lists all the IRP titles in alphabetical order by author’s last name (fiction first, followed by nonfiction).
You will notice that all titles are blue – these are actually direct links to that book’s record in our online catalog. With one click on the spreadsheet, you will be able to see if the book is currently available by scrolling down to the holdings section which is typically in the middle of the page.
Don’t forget, even if our copies are already checked out, you can place a request to get the book from another library by clicking the “Request First Available Copy” button located below the picture of the book.

Check out the new arrivals
After a great (and busy) first quarter, we decided to add some new titles to the shelves just in time for the holidays. We added a lot of different things ranging from the biography of the late Steve Jobs to the final title from the Inheritance cycle.
All of the new additions can be found on the New Book shelf back by the newspapers and magazines. Go takeĀ look and see if there is a book to get you through the long holiday season.
To peruse the new books (as well as many other recently added titles) online – go take a look at the Lourdes Library Shelfari Page.

This book was great! Now what?
The question I probably get asked most often, but the one that is so hard to answer, is “What should I read next?”
Everyone has their own tastes and preferences, and contrary to popular belief, I haven’t read every book ever published!
Well, thanks to a new website called BOOKYAP.COM, the answer to that question just got a little easier.
Bookyap is an online reader advisory service which makes recommendations based on books you have already read and/or personal preferences you enter in (if you have an account).
No account is required – but it is very easy to do and I would recommend getting one since it gives you even better recommendations the more you use it.
Apple users – there is also a BookYap app available for both iPhones and iPads. You can find the FREE app HERE.

Research on the go!
Two of Lourdes Library’s most popular research providers, Ebsco and Gale, have created apps to make their information even easier to access.
The EBSCOhost app brings EBSCO Publishing’s vast and award-winning research databases right to the palm of your hand with a very user-friendly platform. Aside from all the great content and functionality already found on the web, researchers using this app will also have the ability to:
- Save searches into their own account (automatically created within the app)

- Save results for offline use
- Email results to yourself or to others
- View “Cover Flow” display of results
- Retrieve full-text results in both HTML and PDF formats
EBSCOhost is compatible on most Apple, Android and Windows mobile devices. Possibly the best thing about the app is that once it is activated on your device, it automatically logs the user in. Go to the iTunes App Store and download the app. Then, go to the EBSCOhost website here at school as you normally would and click on the “iPhone/iPad touch application” link at the bottom of the page. Once you enter a valid email address that can be opened on your phone, you will recieve an activation message which automatically connects your device to all the research databases Lourdes Library currently subscribes to. (NOTE: The activation email must be accessed on the same device that the app is loaded on for the activation to work)
Access My Library – School Edition is provided by Gale Research and offers all the Gale/InfoTrac resources currently available to Lourdes Library patrons, including:
- Discovering Collection

- Biography in Context
- Consulta and Informe (Spanish-language resources)
- Academic ASAP
- Literary Criticisms
Download the Access My Library app from the iTunes store. Once you open the app, you will have to find our library (go to Minnesota, then Rochester to find Lourdes). There is a password required to get in – so see Mr. Haugen for that.
I hope these two resources will help make your information gathering even easier. As always, if you have any questions, don’t hesitate to ask!

E-Readers now allowed at LHS!
Over the summer, the Rochester Catholic Schools administrative team reviewed and revised its policy on the use of e-Reader devices in schools.
Effective immediately. students are allowed to use their own e-Readers (Kindles, Nooks, etc.) here at Lourdes.
In order to use your device at school, we are asking that you “register” your device and read over an “E-Reader Usage Agreement” which is on Moodle. The process is simple:
1. Click on the link HERE.
2. Login in with your Moodle name and password.
3. Click on “e-Reader Policy”
4. Read through the agreement which explains the rules and regulations regarding e-Reader usage.
5. After reading, click the “Add Entry” tab at the bottom of the page, then enter your name and device type on the page that appears and click “SAVE”
That’s it – once you have completed the form, you are free to bring in your e-Reader device and use whenever appropriate.

Why can’t I just Google it?!?!?
The research season is upon us here at Lourdes with many teachers assigning you to go out and find information on a wide variety of topics. Thirteen years ago, a new Internet search engine called Google was invented and drastically changed the way people looked for information. With just a couple of search terms and a click of the mouse, Google takes you to millions of web sites “related” to their topic.
If this is true – then why are all your teachers telling you you can’t use Google for your research, or that you at least need to limit those findings? Maybe this brief dialogue with “Her Majesty” can help explain things a bit…

Welcome back…
to another great year here at Lourdes
After sitting empty for three months – it’s great to see so many people in and using the library. Obviously finding the perfect IRP Book for the first semester is a high priority early in the year. Make sure to get in early and get your book or, if needed, let Mr. Haugen or Mrs. Oeth order a copy from another library.
Aside from IRP reads, the library did add quite a few books to the shelves over the summer. You can peruse some of them down below…
Here’s to a great year at LHS!
